Almost every Ahmedabad–Srinagar itinerary connects, and Delhi is the sensible place to do it. Total journey time runs four and a half to six hours depending on the layover you land.

Give yourself a real connection window. Ninety minutes domestic-to-domestic in Delhi is tight with checked bags, and for a family of six it is optimistic. Two hours costs you nothing and removes the worst thing that can happen to the first day.

For groups of eight or more we will usually suggest holding the Srinagar hotel from the night before rather than risking a same-day connection — it is one extra night against the whole itinerary shifting.

When to go from Ahmedabad

Your calendar, not the valley’s.

Six nights. You have spent the better part of a day getting here in each direction, and the difference between five and six nights is a whole unhurried valley rather than a rushed one.

Diwali and the school break

October and November are underrated and they line up with Gujarat's biggest holiday window. The chinars turn gold, the crowds have gone home, and both hotels and flights are a third off the June rate. Bring warm clothes — the evenings are already cold.

May, before the monsoon

The classic family fortnight. Everything is open, Sonamarg's road is clear, and there is still snow at the top of the Gondola. It is also the peak, so this is the one to book three months out rather than three weeks.

Winter, if the group is up for it

December to February is snow, and for children who have never seen any that is the whole trip. Be realistic about the cold — Ahmedabad in January and Gulmarg in January are about twenty degrees apart, and hired coats at the base are not enough on their own.
